An open-ended question is a type of question that allows participants to freely formulate their answers in their own words.
It is not limited by predefined answer options and enables participants to provide comprehensive, personalized, and detailed responses.
Open-ended questions are particularly well-suited for gathering qualitative information, opinions, attitudes, or ideas that cannot be captured using closed-ended questions.
Settings and Options for the open-ended question
Text before the answer field
Here you can enter a word or a short note before the text field to provide guidance. If you leave this field blank, nothing will be displayed.
Text after the answer field
Here you can enter a word or a short note after the text field to provide guidance. If you leave this field blank, nothing will be displayed.
Text before and after the answer field
Here you can insert a word or a short note both before and after the text field. If you leave both fields blank, nothing will be displayed.
“Single-line/Multi-line” text field
Use this option to specify whether the answer field is displayed as a single line or multiple lines.
Required question
This option marks the question as required. The respondent must answer the question before proceeding to the next page of the survey.
Help Icon (Tooltip)
Here you can add help text or additional information behind a help icon next to the question title.
Randomize
If you enable this option, the answer fields will be displayed in random order for each participant.
Additional text field
Below the Question This option allows you to provide an additional text field directly below the question, e.g., for comments. The width and row height of the field can be freely defined.
“No Answer” option to avoid having to answer the question
This option is recommended if the question is marked as required. It allows the respondent to skip the question without providing an answer and continue with the survey.
Validate text fields
With this option, you can check text entries for specific formats.
Validation is possible for:
Upload an image
You can place an image directly within the question.
Advantage: The image can be displayed between the question and the answer choices, in addition to the standard image upload in the survey.
Additionally, you can adjust the image’s alignment, set its position (above or below the question title), and assign an ALT attribute, which is important for survey accessibility.
