Topic: Survey setup

Question type: Variable

The variable question is a particularly flexible question type that allows you to combine your own questions using different answer types.

Depending on the configured elements, participants can enter text, select from drop-down menus, click radio buttons, or check multiple options using checkboxes.

This question type enables customized surveys that are tailored to your specific information needs. Possible answer elements:
  • Single-line text field – width can be set freely
  • Drop-down menu with numbers – number of options can be set freely
  • Drop-down menu with text – content and number of options can be set freely
  • Radio buttons – participants select a single answer; content can be set freely
  • Checkboxes – participants can select multiple options; content can be set freely

Settings and options of the variable question type:

Required question
This option allows you to designate the question as required. The respondent must answer the question before proceeding to the next page of the survey.

Help Icon (Tooltip)
This option allows you to display help text or additional information behind a help icon next to the question title.

Randomize
If you enable this option, the answer choices will be displayed in random order to each respondent.

Additional text field below the question
This option allows you to provide a text field for comments directly below the question. You can freely specify the width and height (number of lines).

“No Answer” Option
This option is particularly useful if the question has been defined as a required question. It allows the respondent to “answer” the question even if they do not wish to provide a substantive response, and to continue with the survey.

Validate text fields
This option allows you to check text responses for specific formats and input requirements.

Possible validations:
  • Input of a specific character length
  • Input of an integer
  • Input of a decimal number
  • Input of a date
  • Input of an email address
  • Input of a URL

Upload an Image
You can place an image directly within the question.

Advantage: The image can be displayed between the question and the answer choices, in addition to the standard image upload in the questionnaire.

Additionally, you can adjust the image’s alignment, specify its position (above or below the question title), and assign an ALT attribute, which is important for survey accessibility.
